FurBabies Home Pet Care offers mid-day dog walks to help pet owners make sure their dog is well cared for. But we find, in our conversations with other dog lovers, that many pet owners do not realize how often dogs are supposed to be walked for their own health and wellness.

First, all dogs need walks. It is the primary way they maintain their health. Going on runs, playing – these are all great. But the main thing your dog needs is walks, and they need a lot of them:

    • Dogs need a lot of walking every day. Larger dogs, like Huskies, need about 2 hours. Medium sized herding dogs, like Shetland Sheepdogs, typically need about an hour. Even Chihuahuas need about 30 minutes to an hour. That is a lot of walking to fit into only the time you’re off work.
    • Dogs also need walks multiple times a day. Dogs are not supposed to hold their urine in for more than 6 hours, and are expected to go out to use the bathroom 3 to 5 times a day at least. Walks themselves are also more effective for a healthy dog when they are spread apart. Two 1 hour walks offer more benefits than one 2 hour walk.

Another thing to remember is that, here in Florida, it gets hot. Very hot. If a dog needs 2 hours of walking a day, and it’s 95 degrees and humid, there is very little way you can reach that 2 hours in a safe way – unless you are walking at night. That means that it is especially beneficial to spread it out, especially during hot season.

Getting the Walks Your Dog Needs

It is for these reasons that a mid-day dog walk is a great way to help your dog maintain their health and reduce some of your own stress trying to manage your dog’s needs. That mid-day walk not only helps give your dog the exercise and bathroom breaks that will help them stay healthy – it also reduces their stress, breaking up your time away and giving them something to do to help relax.

Overall, an extra dog walk from an experienced, CPR trained pet sitter is a great way to make sure your dog is well cared for and that you have more free time to enjoy your life. Give FurBabies Home Pet Care a call today to find out more about our dog walking services.
